PETER Murphy doesn't remember dates and times, he remembers makes of Holdens.

Born in Warwick Hospital, Mr Murphy grew up just over the border in Old Koreelah and later at Hewitson's Mill, where his father had bought a house.

Quick-witted and always up for a chat, Mr Murphy said there was one kid to each class at the Hewitson's Mill school.

"So I topped my class," he said.

"I topped it again in Year 7 and they gave me a dictionary as a prize, which to this day is still unused.

"But then I had to go to Woodenbong for high school, so that was the last class I topped.

"I think I peaked early."

It was after high school that the love of cars really set in and Mr Murphy secured himself an apprenticeship with a mechanic in Kyogle.

"Here I was, a little country kid, suddenly I'm in the big city of Kyogle," he said.

"I think it was the early 70s. I tend to remember years by the make of Holden at the time.
