Five Decades of Love Celebrated

AKIN to the aptly named hotel where a young Eunice Mooney first caught the eye of her future husband, Norm Armstrong was destined to be drawn back.

Working at Neptune Oil, Mr Armstrong might not have known it yet, but next door in Nebo Road's Boomerang Hotel was the woman he would spend the rest of his life with.

"I was working mostly at night at the Boomerang in the kitchen and Norm was the one who was interested first," said Mrs Armstrong, who was in her early 20s at the time.

"He was pretty charming back in the day, and he still is."

Mr Armstrong's charm won over his future bride, and the pair was soon married in Mackay's Methodist Church on December 16, 1967.

Fast-forward to 2017, and the couple's lifelong journey together will see them mark five decades of marriage today.

Ingrained in the very fabric upon which Mackay's sporting and family environment is woven, the Armstrong's own family of six children, 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren is matched only in size by the indelible mark the pair has left on the city where they've spent their whole marriage.

While they've lived in East Mackay in the same home where they raised Dellwyn, Priscilla (dec), Alex, Warren, Phillip and Selina for over five decades, it was on the south side of the city where the couple discovered their other family and home away from home.

Sharing an affinity with Souths Football Club for over 40 years, Mrs Armstrong has been on the committee, the board of directors for seven years, a registrar for four, has been a club patron for the last 12 years, and was awarded with Mackay Rugby League life membership in 2016.

Impressive enough of an achievement individually, the journey has been intertwined with the couple's marriage, with Mr Armstrong by his wife's side throughout after originally being linked to the club through their children's sport. …
