IN THE two days before Christmas, Mooloolaba Fish Market retail manager Kristian Penny expects to sell about 11 tonnes of prawns, and the line of seafood shoppers during peak periods to wind up to 300m out the door.

"It will be absolutely crazy," Mr Penny said.

The shop will be open for 38 hours straight from 6am on December 23 to 8pm Christmas Eve.

Mr Penny said from 11pm on December 23 to 4am on Christmas Eve will be the only quiet period during the seafood-selling marathon.

"Every year just gets busier and busier," he said.

But customers could expect less waiting time if they arrived early in the morning.

"It usually doesn't really get crazy until 8am," Mr Penny said.

"You'll have a line out the door by 6am, but then it dies off a bit, then by 8am it just gets going again."

He recommended shoppers who wanted to get in early this week try the 5kg boxes of pre-frozen prawns rather than freezing the seafood themselves to keep it fresh. …
