Couple Stung by Surge; Trip Costs Seven Times the Normal Rate

A COAST couple is warning Uber users to be aware of surges this festive season after they claimed they were charged seven times the normal rate.

Karin Walker and her husband Anthony said they were issued a staggering $350 fare for a trip from Mooloolaba to their home in Doonan on Saturday night.

To make matters worse, it was Mr Walker's boss who ordered the Uber for them and ultimately footed the bill.

"My husband's boss kindly offered to pay for our ride home," Mrs Walker said. "Imagine our horror when my husband arrived at work this morning, only to be informed by a colleague that the Uber ride home had cost $350."

Mrs Walker said the Uber driver made them aware of a surge due to it being a peak time, but said it would only be around double what it would normally cost.

She then questioned whether a taxi would be cheaper but the driver assured her a taxi would cost three times the amount. …
