KIERON Dyer believes there will be a carnival atmosphere if Mike Ashley sells Newcastle United after more than 10 years in charge.

The former Magpies' midfielder believes the fans are one of the club's biggest assets as the Sports Direct owner continues discussions to sell the club, with Amanda Staveley the front-runner to take over.

Dyer, who played for the Magpies between 1999 and 2007, was asked about the future of United and said: "It looks like this takeover is going happen.

"The Geordie fans, with that takeover, the support base, will just provide a carnival atmosphere and that can be like a 12th man."

Despite the poor run of form the club are going through - they have just one win in nine games - Dyer believes Rafa Benitez is the right man to lead United.

When asked if he thought Newcastle would survive the drop, Dyer added: "I do because of Benitez and the type of manger he is. Yes, things are going badly at the moment but their performances have not been bad. …
