Noise Is Making Me Barking Mad

I SAT down in my usual chair to write, armed with my usual cup of coffee, with my usual air of expectancy, and as usual a neighbour chose that moment to harangue her yappy little dog who was challenging a passer-by in a paroxysm of high-pitched barking.

Generally I appreciate people speaking to their overenthusiastic dogs and keeping the neighbourhood from descending into 'canine hell' but when they in turn become a shrewish, whining Gorgon, I begin to feel sympathy for the animal as well as for myself.

Today, this daily theatre seemed to soar above all previous cacophonies I have experienced and my obvious disapprobation was picked up on by a visitor to my home. "You need to install a filter," she said, simply and quietly.

But it came so hard on the heels of all that had just transpired that I was jolted out of my recent indisposition.

I slumped thoughtfully in my chair, ruminating on the obvious wisdom that had come crashing down upon me in my momentary exasperation. …
