WE shouldn't brag, but this year's share picks from the Evening Standard City desk have been rather good, frankly. No thanks to me, as you can see on page 52.

With our pundits 40% up in the year, we'd just about scrape into the top 10 on the Trustnet league tables.

Strip out the Asia-focused funds who've made a bundle from the rebound in markets there, and we'd be top three.

But it's far easier to write about stocks such as we did than actually to invest other people's capital in them.

That kind of work, we respectfully leave to the pros.

So, doff your Christmas party hats to the secretive Guy Rushton, who runs the money in Polar Capital's UK Absolute Equity fund, and pull a cracker for Nick Williamson's Old Mutual UK Smaller Companies Focus fund. They were the top UK investors in the Trustnet unit trusts and OEICs table, pulling off 46% and 45% growth respectively, followed by James Zimmerman's Jupiter UK Smaller Companies fund at 35. …
