WHEN you've spent way too much cash on bonbons and your trifle-making skills aren't on point, life can seem like it's spiralling out of control.

Welcome to the silly season.

It's the period many would rather avoid.

Up until this year I would vilify the Grinches who put a dampener on my festive joy.

But this year it's different.

In the past month I've been accepted into university to study my Masters, accepted a new job in Brisbane and also found a new rental.

This is all happening in the first week of the new year.

In the past week I've had to pay a bond, purchase textbooks on top of all the Christmas gifts which were topping my shopping list.

And this is while I've been strapped for cash during that awkward in-between-jobs period.

It's been fun, stressful but fun.

There have been tears and a lot of consultation with my nearest and dearest about how I can afford to feed myself after not being paid for a month. …
