Cats' Boss Calls for a Positive Attitude

CHRIS Coleman knows only an improvement on the pitch will bring the fans back to the Stadium of Light - and pessimism will ruin the chances of that.

Sunderland are lucky to have an instant chance to cash in on the feel-good factor of last week's 1-0 win over Fulham - their first at home for 364 days.

They play Birmingham City there this afternoon and anyone muttering how it would be "typical Sunderland" to lose to the bottom-of-the-Championship side will get short shrift from the manager.

Building up morale and numbers on the terraces will make Coleman's job of avoiding relegation this season much easier. He said: "The crowd will grow if our performances are good and results are good.

"There's no other way to get them back and keep them.

"If we have a team worthy of them coming to see us - and we earn that by our performances - the numbers will come."

Birmingham have not won away all season - but do not even think it.

Coleman added: "Once you start thinking, 'this could be bad and we could be the team which slips on the banana skin,' I guarantee that'll happen to you, I promise you. …
