THIS hefty tome continues the powerful Kingsbridge saga that historical novelist Ken Follett began with Pillars of the Earth and World Without End.

It brings us into the age of Elizabeth 1st, Good Queen Bess herself. Walsingham, Francis Drake

and other luminaries are all present, if not always correct.

It's essentially a spy story set in the 16th century. With many assassination plots against the Queen, her court set up an espionage system to foil terrorists of the day; the beginnings of the British secret service.

Mary Queen of Scots lies in wait in Paris to oust the young Elizabeth. It's a precarious throne.

Based on painstaking research, "vital for getting the details right", Follett tells a masterful tale.

He is grateful to the many historians who were able to tell him how far a horse can go in one day, or what guns were like in that era. …
