Looking Back at the Lovebirds Who Hit the Headlines THE WYLAM WOOD WEDDING MYSTERY; from Cinema Screens to Tattoos, Here We Take a Look at 2017's Most Bizarre North East Wedding Proposals

Article excerpt

IT hasn't been all plain sailing in 2017, but the news of Prince Harry's engagement to Meghan Markle brought joy to the nation's hearts as the year drew to a close.

The American actress revealed in a TV interview that Harry popped the question as the pair were roasting chicken at home for dinner.

But Harry isn't the only person to hit the headlines for proposing this year - and some of these North East lovebirds really went all out for theirs.

Here we look back at the most romantic - and bizarre - proposals from the region this year.

THE search was on for a mystery romantic after intriguing wedding proposal props suddenly appeared in Wylam woods.

Photographer Graeme Peacock was out on a Sunday morning run when he came upon a white door featuring a red love heart beneath a hand-painted sign that read'the lover'.

A handwritten note tacked onto the door explained that the arrangement was part of a proposal and that its owner would be back to take it down.

The Chronicle put out an appeal to find the lovebird responsible - and readers were delighted to hear that the answer was "yes" when the happy couple came forward hours later.

They are Andy Frey and Lucy Wainwright, who now live in Sheffield but met while both were living in the North East.

Lucy revealed that the white door was a reference to Stephen King's 'Dark Tower'series of books, which both Andy and Lucy love, and where doors into other worlds feature heavily.

Lucy said:"We love to walk that route along the river to Wylam from Newburn whenever we're back. It's a special place for us, but now it's even more special."

CHEEKY BOYFRIEND'S TATTOO PROPOSAL CHRIS Condliffe surprised his girlfriend Sophie Robinson by baring his backside, which now had the words"will you marry iz" tattooed on it, with the engagement ring taped next to it.

The 37-year-old, from North Shields, got his tattoo done at The Tynemouth Tattoo Company, which took an hour of ink work.

Chris surprised Sophie with a white gold engagement ring with a black diamond and skulls at either side.

He said: "I got the idea because I'm slightly mad and this is totally me, just something I would do, so I had to get it done.

"I have ran nightclubs for 15 years and have seen some weird things, so this was right up my street. I have tattoos all over my body but had a cheek free for this special message to go on.

"I had to practice in front of the mirror dropping my pants so I would remember which side it was on. I had to get it right for the unveiling."

LOVE AT THE LONDON MARATHON WALLSEND runner Marie Collinson went the extra mile for her proposal when she got down on one knee and popped the question to her partner during the London Marathon.

As the couple reached the 24-mile mark, Marie pulled out a ring and asked John to marry her. …
