MURDER detectives are investigating a man's death at a Tyneside hostel during the first hours of 2018. The victim was found with serious head injuries at Catherine House, on Shields Road in Byker, Newcastle, after police were called at around 1.40am yesterday.

He was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary where he was pronounced dead.

Police are treating the death as suspicious, with detectives appealing for witnesses.

People living and working nearby have also spoken of their shock at waking up to a murder scene.

Det Supt Mick Paterson, of Northumbria Police said: "We are making extensive enquiries to establish just how this man lost his life.

"We would appeal for anyone who saw or heard anything out of the ordinary in the early hours of this morning to come forward.

"We would also like to reassure the public that we believe this to be an isolated incident.

"People living in the area can expect to see an increased police presence while we carry out our investigations and if anyone is concerned I would urge them to speak to an officer."

There was a heavy police presence at Catherine House early yesterday morning.

Uniformed officers stood at the building's entrances and at around 9.45am forensics officers arrived in two white vans.

Wearing white overalls and masks they could be seen taking pictures both inside and outside the building, and their work appeared to focus on the upstairs of the building.

Later an officer could be seen examining the lock on the front door.

Joanne Murray, from Wallsend, stopped to watch the drama while out on a New Year's Day drive. She told the Chronicle she believed the building was a hostel.

"We have just been down the coast for a walk, then we just thought we would go for a drive as you do on New Year's Day then we saw this," she said. …
