Euro Glory a Real String to Young Archer Wise's Bow; ARCHERY

AFTER a year which has been bang on target, archer Alex Wise hopes to fire his way to the very top of his sport, writes TONY HODGSON.

The 17-year-old from Newcastle has enjoyed a memorable 2017 at competitions across the globe - the highlight winning individual and team gold for Great Britain at the European Cup in Croatia.

Before that the teenager performed impressively at the European Championships in France, helping GB to fifth place overall and ending up 17th individually.

Later in the year Wise contested the World Cup in Berlin - his first senior competition - the World Youth Championships in Argentina (he was 11th overall) and the Senior World Championships in Mexico, where he won a mixed team gold.

Not bad going for a lad from the Bowmen of Walker Archery Club who until a year ago had had no formal coaching.

That run of success has propelled Wise to No 3 in the world - but he is not prepared to rest on his laurels.

Wise said: "My aim for 2018 is to compete in as many senior tournaments as I can and just continue to improve.

"I will also be looking to the European Championships and the Worlds again - but longer-term it would be my dream to make the GB team for the Tokyo Olympics.

"Despite my age I don't think Tokyo would be too soon.

"If I can continue to progress as I am I have to feel I can make the team."

On 2017, Wise added: "It was a very long season - with the dates of some of the championships it ran almost two months longer than normal.

"It was hectic and there was a lot of travelling involved but I enjoyed every minute of every competition and learned so much. The highlight would have to be Croatia.

"I went into the event hoping I could medal but to win two - and golds at that - was beyond my wildest dreams.

"My week did not start too well - I did not perform as well in the qualifying stages as I would have liked to. …
