DURING a short stay by a fellow bird photographer, we decided to take him for a day trip along the Capricorn Coast, calling in on places where there might be opportunities to photograph the bird life.

One of the places we went to was Rosslyn Bay, where I knew that ospreys were nesting in a high box above the car park.

We had picked a good time to arrive as the sun was in a position behind us and the nest was well lit.

One of the parent birds was sitting on the side of the nest. As we focused, it became evident that what looked like a young one was there too. It began flapping its wings and jumping up and down as we photographed.

All of a sudden, the baby started calling out loudly.

From previous experience, such antics on the part of the young birds usually means that one of its parents must be on the way with food. …
