WOULD-BE bandits were sent on their way by a brave takeaway owner who chased them off with a plastic tray.

Two masked men burst into The Magic Wok on Welbeck Road in Walker, Newcastle, at around 10.25pm on Tuesday. Shop worker Mei Chung Shek froze in fear as one of the men was brandishing a knife and threatened to stab her. She said: "It was so scary and I was really frightened. I was sitting behind the counter reading before I got up to serve them, thinking they were customers. One of them got out a knife and shouted at me 'don't make any noise or I will stab you'.

"I told them the boss had taken all the money away but they were shouting at me to give it to them."

As Ms Shek moved slowly towards the till, he said the shop's owner Koon Ping Lee rushed out of the kitchen armed with a plastic tray.

He said one of the men tried to grab some money from the till but they were then chased out of the takeaway by Mr Lee. …
