More progress on the MGT Power site in Teesside AN army of Teesside workers has helped one of the region's most important industrial projects hit a major milestone. The PS650m Tees Renewable Energy Plant (TeesREP) now has more than 500 staff working on site, building the world's largest biomass power station on the south bank of the Tees.

Over recent months, 280 workers on the site were from Teesside itself with another 130 from the immediate region in the North-east - a combined total of around 80%.

Felipe Morales, project director for contractors Tecnicas Reunidas, said: "To have such a high concentration of local workers on a complex global-scale project like this is unusual. Many of the tasks on our site require highly specialised skills and experience and it speaks volumes about what Teesside offers that we have been able to find so many workers with the applicable skills and experience within the region".

TeesREP will be fuelled by wood chip and pellets and by around 2020 will generate electricity for the equivalent of 600,000 homes, creating hundreds of construction jobs and then more than 100 full-time roles. To help find the right people for the right jobs, It speaks about what offers that been able many Felipe MGT Teesside and Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council have set up a training and employment hub in Grangetown, a few miles from the project's doorstep.

Cllr Sue Jeffrey, leader of Redcar and Cleveland Council, said: "When roles become available on the project we work with potential employees to understand and identify the most suitable training options to ensure they are given the best chance of being selected. We are delighted that MGT and its contractors have taken on so many of the local residents who have been supported through the Grangetown Hub. We look forward to further opportunities coming forward over the coming months. …
