We Booked Premium Economy but Never Got the Experience

Q We have booked a summer holiday to Barbados in July with Virgin Atlantic, flying premium economy from Gatwick. We received a call telling us we are being downgraded to economy as the replacement planes being arranged don't do premium economy. Virgin said it will repay our upgrade price but we will be sitting in economy, so our wedding anniversary trip will now not have the glitter we wanted. What can we do? Ronnie D A Virgin Atlantic and other airlines are having issues with the Trent 1000 engines on their Boeing 787 Dreamliners, which are wearing out earlier than expected, and spare parts are hard to come by. To make up for the shortfall, Virgin Atlantic has leased some Airbus A330 jets that used to be flown by the nowdefunct Air Berlin. They do not have premium economy.

A spokesperson for the airline told me: "We are contacting customers impacted by this change to discuss their options.

"If it is possible (and convenient) for the customer, we'll look to accommodate premium economy customers on an alternative Virgin Atlantic service. …
