MULTI-MILLION pound plans for two new state-ofthe-art schools and a leisure centre in Ponteland are expected to be given the go-ahead.

Northumberland County Council wants to demolish Ponteland Leisure Centre, which has been deemed "old, tired and uneconomical".

The local authority is proposing to build a new leisure centre and two schools in its place, which will be housed in one complex.

The proposals are part of plans to move from a three-tier to a two-tier education system in the area.

A council report said the primary school will accommodate 420 pupils while the high school will have 1,600 places, including a sixth form.

Meanwhile, the leisure centre will have a six-lane 25m swimming pool, fitness suite, a Clip 'n' Climb wall, library and community police facilities.

If the proposals are approved, the council expects the facilities to be up and running in September 2019. …
