PS21m New-Look for Town Centre; Key Stage for the Future of Centre of S. Shields

A NEW bus and Metro interchange in a Tyneside town is to move a step closer as North East councils prepare to chip in a further PS6m.

The North East Combined Authority, which is made up of the region's seven councils, will meet next week to vote to free the funds.

With work already under way to clear the ground for the new development, it's a clear sign the longplanned overhaul to South Shields town centre is about to become a reality.

The combined Metro and bus centre, which will cost a total of PS21m, is expected by autumn 2019.

Work has been continuing to demolish the former post office and Royal Mail building and Dawson and Sanderson travel agents on Keppel Street.

The interchange is part of the PS100m 'South Shields 365' regeneration plan, which has already seen the construction of literary centre 'The Word' and the upgrade of Market Place.

Coun Iain Malcolm, leader of South Tyneside Council, said: "The new transport interchange will provide a stunning new gateway to the town centre and an enhanced visitor experience. …
