Point of View; So What If Jesus Had Not Been Born?

The Ponte Vedra Freethinkers are writing in response to the guest column "What would world look like if Jesus had not been born?" by Scott Powell in the Dec. 24 Times-Union.

Let's state first that the article didn't substantially live up to the title.

Powell focused solely on the presumed moral high ground of Christianity. But the question his title poses is much more than morals.

Whether or not you are a believer in Jesus, and whether or not he actually lived, Jesus and his followers have been factors in shaping global history and culture for millennia.

So, what would the world look like without Jesus?

I suppose a majority of us would be Jewish, Hindu or Islamic.

North America would likely have been colonized by others instead of primarily pilgrims from England to start, leading it to be a very different place than it is now. It might resemble other continents with several smaller independent countries instead of one large conglomerate.

Would the ideal of democracy have been reinvigorated somewhere at some time?

The narrative by Powell focuses solely on the perceived threats to Christianity by "radical Islamists and secular progressives." He also states, "life around the world would be worse today if Christ had never been born."

The writer then narrates examples of what he believes to be benefits that could only have occurred with Jesus' influence on the world.

But would the same benefits not also have been seen if Judaism had become the predominant faith, since Jesus was Jewish and never renounced his faith?

Is it fair to omit the good deeds and peaceful lessons taught by Buddhism or the integrity shown by Gandhi who was Hindu and began the ushering in of independence and civil rights in India?

Can we say that Christians have never committed sinful cultural crimes? …
