LEE Cattermole says Sunderland's youngsters have proved they can play first-team football - and told them what they have to do is pretty simple.

The four players in front of Cattermole in the middle of the park on Saturday - Josh Maja, Joel Asoro, George Honeyman and Ethan Robson - could still be in the under-23s but instead played starring roles in the 1-0 victory over Hull City.

Some of their football was excellent but there was a more basic quality Cattermole felt was fundamental.

"We knew it was going to be tough, they (Hull) are an experienced side and you could see they were a decent outfit but from the off I think the way we played, the tempo we played, the pressing, every man from Robbin (Ruiter, the goalkeeper) to Joel (Asoro, the goalscorer) and (Josh) Maja up front, everyone was bang on it," the midfielder told his club's official website.

"It's difficult for the young boys but they stepped up to it and really proved they're ready to be playing in the first team. …
