A TOOWOOMBA family is looking forward to honouring their grandfather's legacy by taking part in the Milne Bay Military Challenge in March.

Gemma Boundy's grandfather Sergeant Stanley John Garrett served in the Darling Downs-based 25th Battalion and spent 873 days fighting in Papua New Guinea during the Second World War.

Now, Mrs Boundy and her father Pat Garrett have formed "Stan's Clan", and will take part in the challenge that honours the service of the 25th Battalion, which was instrumental in repelling the Japanese invasion of Milne Bay in PNG during the Second World War.

The trail run/walk started five years ago as the Kokoda Challenge, and this is its second year under the new name of the Milne Bay Military Change.

Organiser Tressa Lindenberg said the name was changed last year to reflect the involvement of the local 25th Battalion and its role in the historic battle at Milne Bay.

"We really do need to keep (that memory) alive," Ms Lindenberg said. …
