CRICKET: It may have been a tough "grind" at the crease but it was one that earned the Scorchers a commanding position in their two-day battle against Gold Coast.

In a bid to bounce back from last week's heavy defeats, Scorchers elected to bat and rack up plenty of time in the middle.

It was a plan that paid dividends, with the Coast outfit walking off the Bill Pippen Oval only five wickets down for 263 runs.

Scorchers notched up some solid efforts across the board, with Brendan Mahaffey knocking 61 off 165 balls and Kobi Griggs reaching 55 off 86 balls.

Following a few lacklustre performances, Angus Lovell was pleased to be among those earning runs and minutes in the middle.

He finished the day on 50 not out after facing 135 balls.

"I've been struggling a little bit this year so it was good just to spend some time in the middle and it wasn't easy going out there as well," he said.

"At times I think it was pretty hard to force shots that weren't there so you kind of had to grind it out and wait for the bad ball. …
