Bundaberg Sheds Fat Mantle; Mackay Takes over as Nation's Fattest City

BUNDABERG, once maligned for being the fattest city in Australia, has lost the dishonour Mackay and Townsville.

Obesity rates in the northern centres have increased faster than any other region in Australia over an eight-year period, a new report has found.

Mackay leads the state with a whopping 83.9 per cent of people overweight.

Despite the news the obesity epidemic in Bundaberg isn't over with more than 70 per cent of people overweight, well above the state average of 64 per cent.

Cairns is the healthiest region with 51 per cent of people overweight while overweight adults in Toowoomba decreased by more than 22 per cent.

It was the only significant decrease across the nation.

Cancer Council Queensland CEO Chris McMillan said it was concerning to see rates still rising in some areas and reminded people to put their health first ahead of World Cancer Day on Sunday.

"Being obese or overweight can have a detrimental impact on your health and is one of the leading contributors to chronic diseases later in life, including some cancers," Ms McMillan said. …
