The Smarter Way to Enjoy a Tipple; Think Technology Can't Be Useful When Having a Drink or Two? Think Again

Article excerpt

ELL, I'm glad that's over.

WI'm sure you'll feel the same if you've taken part in the annual madness of Dry January. Now we can all drink again (in moderation, of course, and only if we're old enough), it's time to up our game.

How can technology help us drink better and drink smarter? Read on.

VIVINO (iOS and Android, free with in-app purchases) VIVINO is a number of things - a social network for wine-lovers, a wine shop, and a wine recommendation system.

The app features more than 200,000 different bottles of wine, and more than 25million users who have rated and ranked them all.

So it's easy to get ideas and suggestions from them for any occasion.

You can even scan the label of a bottle using your phone's camera, and the app will tell you what the wine should cost, whether it's any good, and what you should eat with it.

Take a photo of the wine list in a restaurant and the app will tell you which one to go for.

The app is free, but a subscription (PS32-a-year) offers a range of benefits, not least of which is free delivery on any wine you buy.

CORAVIN MODEL 2 (PS249) IF YOU'RE buying nice wine, and you're not drinking the whole bottle in one big gulp (who does that?), you run the risk of allowing it to deteriorate over time. Once the cork's out, it starts to suffer.

That's where the Coravin Model Two comes in - it's a handy device that allows you to drink a glass of wine from any bottle sealed with a cork, without removing the cork.

It inserts a tiny needle through the cork and into the wine, allowing you to take just a glassful (or two).

Once the needle comes out, the cork naturally reseals and the wine in the bottle is replaced by an inert gas - every glass is as good as the first.

UNTAPPED (iOS and Android, free) IF YOU'RE more of a beer person, you definitely need Untapped.

It's an app that helps you find great beer near where you live.

It can tell you which good beers are available in pubs close by, and update you when specials come in, or your favourites are on tap.

It wouldn't be a real app without a social element, so there's that too - follow friends, see what they're drinking, and share your own discoveries with them. …
