WITH the local tourism industry gaining good momentum, and the recent announcement of Mackay being named Top Australian Town in 2018 by leading travel website Wotif, accommodation providers and tour operators are seeing a bright future for tourism.

Perry Finbow, new general manager of Riviera Mackay, talks to Escape about how he plans to capitalise on the momentum into the future.

Where are you from? Boston, Lincolnshire, in the UK. But I have been overseas now for 20 years.

Had you heard about Mackay before arriving? Yes, mainly due to the sugar plantations and of course BHP.

Have you had experience in the hospitality/tourism industry? Yes, I have managed hotel properties from Cancun (Mexico) to Kangaroo Island in South Australia. I have also worked for UK tour operators around the world.

How did you get involved in the industry? A passion for travel and chasing the sun - with the odd occasional visit to the snow.
