Top Pairing Difficult to Beat; Walsh and Blackburn Face Some Strong Combinations

THE first major event on the 2018 bowls calendar is the district Mixed Pairs competition to be played at City and North Mackay clubs on February 17/18.

Last year's winners, Souths Suburban's Dealia Walsh and Peter Blackburn, will be difficult to beat again but there are some strong combinations from their own club and other district clubs.

Mackay Club's Robyn Devereux and Noel Wilson were runners-up last year and combine well together; Airlie's Betty Nicolle and Armando Isgro were finalists in 2016; Suburban's Lorna Coad and Bruce Currie played very well togther last year; and fellow club members, Di Faulkner and Ray Kurtz, will again play a prominent role in the competition.

Nominations close on Sunday and the winners will represent Mackay in the group final against the Leichhardt district in August.

Selectors choose

Men's district selectors, Trevor Kelly (Northern Beaches), Martin Corr (Proserpine) and Brad Bettiens (Sarina), had a good look over 26 bowlers who played trial matches at Sarina on Saturday. …
