Keeping Up with the Upkeep of Our Roads

IT'S been a cold winter, and the scourge of Teesside's roads are once again causing misery for motorists.

Potholes have opened up on roads - and Gazette readers are sick of them.

One said venturing out in the car on Teesside "is like driving on the surface of the moon".

And a pensioner even said he struggled to sleep for the noise cars make bumping over the holes in the road in Buttermere Avenue, in Acklam, Middlesbrough.

It was announced last year that Teesside's councils were set to receive PS477,000 to repair 9,000 holes in the road, and to prevent them occurring.

Stockton Council was granted the largest share of the cash, and was given PS194,000 to fix 3,700 potholes.

And Councillor Mike Smith, Stockton Council Cabinet member for Environment and Transport, said: "We know that the upkeep of our road surfaces is very important to people and were delighted when a national survey conducted by Ipsos MORI last year found residents' satisfaction with our highways and transport services to be the highest of any council in the country.

"That said, we are far from complacent and like any other authority, we expect the freezing winter temperatures to take their toll on the borough's road network.

"But we will mitigate that as best we can by continuing with our proactive and carefully planned approach to maintaining our principal highways network.

"This includes routine inspections and independent testing and means that, in most cases, we can identify and treat weaknesses in road surfaces early, which helps to reduce accidents and injuries to road users. Of course, this is proving to be an increasingly difficult challenge in light of huge Government cuts to our budgets.
