I HAVE often been asked if there are any special types of bird photographs that I like to take, more so than others.

Realistically all bird photos are pleasing for me.

I love taking flight shots but I am also particularly enthused when photographing birds either at the nest or with young. Seeing a family from the building of the nest, through the egg-laying stage, the hatching and the growing till they are ready to depart is a wonderful experience.

This is easiest to follow when the bird builds a bowl-shaped nest.

These nests are open with a clear view of the contents. Dome-shaped nests with a side entrance, tunnels in the ground or into white ants' nests and similar types make it more difficult to know whether there are eggs or babies until such times as the young ones stick their heads out to receive their food.

It may be stating the obvious but the best place to go to try for flight photos would be where birds are gathered in colonies or in other large groups. …
