I CAME home from work the other day and realised I had a tear in my shirt.

My initial thoughts were to chuck it out and use it as an excuse to buy a new one.

But I'm trying to be thrifty at the moment and save my pennies, which have dwindled rapidly already this year.

So I pulled the sewing machine I was gifted a few years ago from the back of my boot, dusted it off and set it up.

I used to take sewing lessons when I was in primary school and it was something I really enjoyed.

I mentioned that I'd like to take it back up again a little while ago and hence why I was presented with a sewing machine one Christmas.

It wasn't until now that I've actually seriously considered using it.

I don't know why because not only is it pretty cool to be able to make and mend your own clothes but it can also help cut back on clothing waste. …
