Plans for Oversized Food Hub Dropped; No Stomach for Development

PLANS for a controversial food processing facility on the outskirts of Bangalow have been abandoned by the developer following sustained community opposition.

The $20 million-plus Rural Industries Food Precinct proposed by Chase Lismore Road Pty Ltd was sold on the idea of keeping businesses established in the Byron Shire at home - along with plenty of jobs.

But locals could not stomach the proposed size of the precinct at 210 Lismore Rd, which would have featured three 5000sqm industrial buildings that could be doubled in size to 10,000sqm in later stages along with other buildings.

There was also strong argument the industrial project was incompatible with the rural land (RU1) zoning of the 26ha farm.

The development application was to be assessed by the Joint Regional Planning Panel later this month but was formally withdrawn this week.

Ean Jones, one of many vocal opponents to the project, said yesterday that he felt relieved. …
