Top Japanese Karate Senseis to Teach in Mackay

Martial arts: Mackay Karate Centre are set to host two of the world's best Japanese Karate Association instructors this week.

From today at St Patrick's Hall, Sensei Lutie van den Berg (7th dan JKA), will welcome Naka Tatsuya (7th dan JKA) and Okuma Koichiro (6th dan JKA) Senseis from JKA Headquarters in Japan.

Predicting students to gain plenty of experience from the guidance of Tatsuya and Koichiro, Van den Berg is no stranger to the abilities of Tatsuya, who he fought in the quarter-finals of the 1992 JKA World Karate Championships.

"I remember Naka Sensei (Tatsuya) and my match clearly... it was the match to go through to the medal round," Van den Berg said.

"I struck first to his face which made him stumble backwards, but the judges thought it was not a point due to excessive contact.

"He then scored a brilliant point to my face. Close to the end of the match Naka Sensei and I both moved forward he punched to my face and I to his body. …
