VIETNAM can be a polarising destination and is not everyone's idea of a holiday.

But one thing Vietnam does very well is offer variety for tourists, as it caters for all types from backpacker to the traveller who likes to be spoilt.

In recent years Vietnam has developed into a very popular holiday destination for Australians.

And it's a destination that won't break the bank.

Meals, drinks, accommodation, transport, sightseeing and shopping are all very cheap. I would go as far as saying it would be on par or better than Bali as far as costs and quality goes.

As for accommodation, you can stay in 4 or 5 star hotels for much less than you would pay here in Australia for something similar.

As a holiday destination, Vietnam will offer you many choices, you can relax at one of the many beachside resorts along sandy beaches located just 45 minutes from Ho Chi Minh City at Phu Quoc or be adventurous and explore Vietnam from top to bottom.

A couple of must-see cities if you decide to visit Vietnam are the colonial architecture of Hanoi, the hustle and bustle of Ho Chi Minh City, the beautiful city of Hoi An and if time permits, an overnight stay on a traditional junk boat on Halong Bay. Whatever you choose it won't be enough. Once you are there the time seems to fly by and before you know it you are on a plane home.

If you do decide to travel to Vietnam, as an Australian passport holder you will be required to purchase a tourist visa.

This can be done through your local travel agent. Vietnam is three hours behind us as far as time changes go and one Australian dollar will get you around 17,000 dong.

Jetstar, Singapore Airlines, Thai Airways and of course Vietnam Airlines all fly from Australia to Vietnam. …
