IF I'M pushed, I may admit to faking stuff in my lifetime.

I like to think that I don't just out and out lie, but I'm not too proud to admit there have been times I may have stretched the truth.

Particularly when you get put on the spot by your peers when the topic of conversation comes around to some really "blokey" stuff.

Things are definitely less macho and more fluid than they used to be, but there are still things I am proud to do, that as a man, allow me to puff my chest out a bit around the bar at the footy club or the barbecue if the need arises.

Especially after a few beers and some of the young bucks start to strut their stuff.

I'd like to think that the older you get, the smarter you are, and these incidents get further and further between.

The obvious problem with faking it is that sooner or later you get put to the test and people find out that you are a bit of a bull-artist.

I remember one such event a few years ago when I was a young copper at the water police.

A person was missing, feared drowned, at a dam near Brisbane and someone was needed to tow a boat up there and look around for the body.

Now the dam in question had a low water level and had a notoriously long and difficult boat ramp so the boss asked if I was any good at backing a boat trailer.

I immediately replied "oh yeah, no probs boss" where in fact nothing could have been further from the truth.

Now you might think that a bit of boat launching experience might have been a pre-requisite for the Water Police but at this stage I had only been there a few weeks and the subject had never even been broached.

I was an experienced boatie and owned a boat, but it was over 30 feet long and lived in the water, not on a trailer.

The sum of my trailer reversing experience was precisely zero. …
