Martland Ready for Dragfest; More Than 150 Competitors Expected at the Dragway

DRAG RACING: Warwick competitor Bill Martland drives his drag racing car to work each day but his daily take-offs are a lot slower than at the Warwick Dragway.

He is one of an expected 150 competitors in round 1 of JP Racing Dragfest this weekend.

He first competed in the fast street class 18 years ago driving a 1993 VR Holden Commodore.

"When I first raced, it was our family car but it was heavy on fuel and we bought another car 10 years ago," he said.

He remembers once winning the last race of the day against Bud Kelly from Toowoomba to ensure Warwick won the Whoop Ass Cup for inter-town supremacy.

"I have won a heap of trophies over the years but would love to be the overall winner of Dragfest," he said.

"The closest I have been to winning was third nine years ago."

Martland missed eight years of racing due to a heart condition but his condition has improved and he is back at work and back drag racing.

"I am only racing now because of the help and sponsorship of Shane Baker from Shane's Bikes, Boats and Performance," Martland said. …
