Company Takes on Superbugs; Software Helps Solve How Infections Spread

FROM the relatively non-sterile environs of an old Coast farm shed has spawned an innovation to exterminate hospital superbugs.

Smartline Machinery managing director Will Smart's medical equipment cabinets safeguard against the spread of bacteria like potentially fatal carbapenemase-producing enterobacteriaceae.

They store and dry endoscopes, the equipment used in colonoscopy and gastroscopy procedures.

The cabinets will soon be able to do that with improved accountability after his Yandina company received a $150,000 Federal Government grant to fast track development of an integrated software program.

Mr Smart started out in a Palmwoods shed in 1996 after a company he was working for failed.

"I then started literally with a $500 Visa card and my apprenticeship toolbox and a determination to try to do something a little bit different," he said.

His company moved to Yandina about three years ago and now exports products into 53 countries around the world. …
