They're Called 'Flood Plains' for a Reason

HAVING taken considerable interest in the recent "Don't Rock The Maroochy" debate, and been pleased with our council's decision to abandon the proposal to place various rock structures at the mouth, I have been following the Twin Waters West issue somewhat loosely.

However, after reading the review of the modelling used to justify the use of this land for urban purposes, I am once again dismayed at the inability of developers, and maybe some of our council folk, to understand that flood plains are not called flood plains for nothing.

More importantly, flood plains are part of the whole catchment system, and do not behave in isolation from that system.

The use of models to try to forecast future flood events is highly dependent on the scope of the study, and the capacity of the model to accurately identify all the inputs and outputs. This is always going to be limited by a range of factors including the terms of reference, funding, time, etc.

The review identified several questions in that point to these limits. …
