Two area amateur tournaments have grown so much in popularity that waiting lists and qualifiers have now become the norm.

The link? Both are played at Donald Ross-designed courses.

First up will be the Florida Senior Azalea March 9-11 at the Palatka Golf Club. The tournament has had a waiting list since early January, with entries from 20 states. Doug Hanzel of Savannah, Ga., is the defending champion in the HEAL benefits from golf gig'senior division, Rob Hess of Castleberry is the defending super-senior champion and Brian Sachs of Gainesville is the defending legends division champion.

Also playing this year will be David Anthony of Jacksonville in the super-senior division and Steve Melnyk of Jacksonville in the legends division.

Golfweek has ranked the Senior Azalea as one of the top five senior amateur events in the nation for strength of field. More information can be obtained by visiting palatkagolfclub.com.

Rapidly catching up is the seventh annual Timuquana Cup, which will be at the Timuquana Country Club May 4-6. Last year's field had the national No. 1-ranked players in three categories, Joe Deraney (mid-amateur), Hanzel (senior) and Hess (super senior).

Waiting lists are expected in all three divisions but there will be a local qualifier on March 25 at Timuquana, with three spots available in the mid-am division and two in the senior division. For information, visit timuquanacup.com.
