Article excerpt

THE Queen's Baton Relay is on its final stretch and will arrive in Mackay on Tuesday, March 20.

The Queen's baton is travelling 230,000km over 388 days until it reaches the Commonwealth Games for the opening ceremony on April 4.

The relay began on Commonwealth Day (March 13, 2017) at Buckingham Palace and Queen Elizabeth II's message was placed inside the baton.

In Mackay 35 community heroes have been chosen as baton bearers.

On Tuesday, the baton will weave its way through North Mackay and the journey includes a special ride up the Pioneer River in an Offshore Superboat.

The QBR will take in most of the city centre and business owners and residents are encouraged to line the streets and cheer on the baton bearers.

The day will finish with a community celebration at Bluewater Quay.

Mayor Greg Williamson said the arrival of the Queen's Baton Relay would generate a buzz in the region.
