A REVIEW in 2020 of a university funding freeze looms as critical for current and future Coast medical students.

The Daily can reveal the University of the Sunshine Coast is set to forego about $1.5 million over the next two years in Commonwealth funding for its cohort of Bachelor of Medical Science students.

Without the funding freeze ushered through as part of the Federal Government's mid-year economic update in December, 2017, the current crop of 22 students enrolled in the course would normally have triggered payments to the university of about $23,000 each per year.

The loss of those payments -- after funding was frozen at 2017 levels about six months prior to the medical science course starting -- left a $500,000 hole in the budget in 2018 and up to $1 million in 2019.

The University is covering the shortfall for now, while also providing 20 of the 22 students with $9000 Vice-Chancellor Merit Scholarships for their academic efforts in Year 12. …
