It's a Tough Gig but Gladstone Is Unique

FOUR years ago Gladstone business owner Patrice Brown was under significant pressure to shut up shop and go elsewhere, but something made her stay.

"Operating a business in Gladstone is testing, it's no easy street. Running a business anywhere is no easy street," she said.

"It's testing, particularly during the construction phase and industry boom in 2013 and 2014 when they were building the LNG plants.

"Those were bad years for us. The construction phase that was the biggest blow, it was more damaging to local business than anything else. More consultancy foreign firms moved into Gladstone and it was more competitive than before."

It's Gladstone's persistent optimism that is "naturally bred in the region" that has kept the managing director fighting.

"It's an interesting place which has always had an optimistic attitude. That goes right back to its early days from being a meat works city to realising its true potential as a harbour city," Mrs Brown said. …
