A TAN has never been much of a reality for my poor skin.

I spend most of the year with my white legs buried away, knowing if I ever took the stroll to the clothesline I assume my house has, I would walk back inside a sun-slapped pink.

Then I am blessed to skip any kind of nice colour and revert straight back from pink to white.

The closest I have ever come to a tan is that from a bottle - or watching my freckles join up.

I like to think I am pretty sun safe but the odds - and my genetics - are against me and melanoma is something I find pretty terrifying.

I try to be as sun smart as possible - slip, slop, slap and all that important stuff - and I endeavour to teach my kids to keep themselves safe.

But reading about Julie Dawson's battle with melanoma was a wake-up call that I really am not doing everything I need to keep myself safe. …
