AFTER a month of sustained and heavy winds and rain, this weekend looks set to sate the appetites of local anglers keen to cast aside the recent "landlubber feeling" and wet a line.

John Bennett, president of the Mackay Recreational Fishers Alliance, said conditions had been "tough" with a month of 25-30 knot winds "so offshore fishing has been off the table".

"A few people have been trying onshore and in the creeks with varied results and we've seen a few barra caught between wind gusts."

However, he said tomorrow and Sunday, 10-15 knot winds were expected and conditions would be "good".

"It's the first opportunity we've had in a month. The offshore guys will be out this weekend."

Nashy's Compleat Angler in North Mackay owner, Bruce Nash, or 'Nashy', said next week's new moon was also setting up ideal conditions for catching prawns.

He recommended casting for prawns at Armstrong Beach and Rocky Dam Creek at the mouth.

"I'm hearing mixed reports about crabbing but there's been some good catches so you can get them in the main channels and the holes around the mangroves. Most creeks have that sort of system."

He recommends using strip, fresh bait or prawns and sticking to bridges and pylons for barramundi "because they seem to hover there this time of year when the water's a bit discoloured".

"There's been a few king salmon outside Constant Creek, and a few tarpon biting where you catch the barramundi. You can't eat them but use them for crab pot bait if you catch them."

Or head to the front of Bakers Creek for trevally "and there's a good haul of whiting upstream of McCreadys Creek.

The BCF Mackay team recommends fishing in rivers and dams for barramundi, especially Kinchant Dam, using hard bodies and plastics. …
