THE win by Drumbeats filly Magestical Maiden in last Saturday's Queensland Thoroughbred Incentive Scheme Maiden at the Gympie Racecourse exemplified the value of QTIS to the Queensland Racing Industry.

Total prize money to the winner was $9800, setting a record as the richest maiden prize ever in Gympie.

This $9800 was made up of $4550 in standard prize money plus the standard $3500 QTIS bonus with the extra fillies' 50 per cent bonus of $1750 boosting the winner's total to $9800.

Essentially, progeny of Queensland-based sires are eligible for QTIS with owners required to make two payments, each of $580 as a young horse.

In the country areas, the QTIS bonuses extend to five-year-olds with the extra female bonuses extending to four-year-old mares.

Not surprisingly, QTIS races are very popular in the country as shown by last weekend's results.

At Blackall, all eight starters in the QTIS BM 55 were QTIS eligible. In the Innisfail two-year-old QTIS maiden, all nine were QTIS, QTIS bonuses went to all placegetters in the Julia Creek QTIS Maiden 6/7 and to first and second in the Noorama QTIS Maiden. The Thangool QTIS Maiden winner was QTIS and 5/8 starters were QTIS eligible while in Gympie, 5/6 QTIS bonuses went to first and second.

Gympie races

He said he was accustomed to very small crowds of around 200 at the mid-week provincial meetings he usually attends and was surprised to see the Gympie crowd of about 1000 people.

High price

ONE race-goer was stunned and astounded when charged $7 for a humble scone in the racecourse dining room last Saturday.

With no visible price list of food items available, the price was understandably a shock. …
