'My Move to Boro Was a Mistake' Says Ex-Striker

EX-Middlesbrough striker Jeremie Aliadiere says he made a mistake when joining the club from Arsenal in 2007.

The Frenchman signed for Boro when then-boss Gareth Southgate was looking to put his own stamp on the side ahead of his second full season in charge.

Aliadiere was 24 at the time, and although he'd spent the previous seven years with Arsenal he'd only started 19 senior games and came off the bench on 32 occasions.

After completing the PS2m capture of Aliadiere 11 years ago, then-chief executive Keith Lamb told of how the striker "fit perfectly with the sort of player we are trying to bring in".

The striker would go on to make 69 league starts for Boro but scored only 11 goals.

Now, as a 35-year-old free agent, Aliadiere has reflected on that move and revealed that he believes he made an error in leaving the Gunners so soon.

The forward says Arsene Wenger wanted him to stay in North London and now, in hindsight, believes he could have replaced Thierry Henry in the Arsenal side had he sat tight. …
