Article excerpt

Rugby league: Halves Matt Duggan and Travis Burns combined to mastermind the demolition of Toowoomba Rugby League first grade premiership leaders the Dalby Diehards 38 - 30 at Platz Oval on Sunday.

Duggan was inspirational in the vital Wattles win, earning player of the match honours despite a spell in the sin bin for a professional foul.

Coach Travis Burns nominated Duggan as the key component in the victory, but was reluctant single players out in what he termed a fine team performance.

"We have been working on ball security and movement issues at training and it came togerther well today."

Reigning TRL top grade premiers the Diehards showed their metal to rally in the final twenty minutes though scoring an unanswered 22 points including four tries that had them in the game to the end.

Alas is was too little too late with Wattles sensational first stanza laying the foundation for a confidence boosting win.

Scoring at better than a point a minute for the initial quarter hour through tries by the elusive Richardson, fellow winger Braydon Wilson and hooker Liam Ross, the home side surged ahead 16 - 0 after fifteen minutes.

Impressive Diehards five-eight Mitchell Taylor and exciting winger Alex Ambia crossed for first half four pointers to keep their side in touch, as the Warriors posted additional tries by centre Nick Van Der Poel and a second to winger Richardson to head to half time with a one-sided 28 - 8 advantage. …
