The Girl in the Red Beret

The splash of red in a sea of monochrome draws his gaze to the opposite platform.

The girl in the jaunty red beret moves briskly through the crush of early morning commuters, indistinguishable by their sameness.

He leans forward, searching for a glimpse as she disappears within the crowd, and grins broadly, unaccountably cheered, when she reappears as the train arrives.

The economic cohort alight; departing in a flurry of air.

Disappointed, he turns away.

Is that her, on the platform still, waving and pointing?

Triumphantly he plucks the red beret from the breeze and waves back.
