AM I the only person who has noticed, and being negatively affected by, the increasing number of student accommodation blocks being built in Newcastle City Centre? It would appear that the council planning department are hellbent on passing all applications submitted to them for new student blocks.

One only has to walk around Shieldfield and the city centre to see the overwhelming number of buildings under construction. This is despite neighbours objecting in large numbers.

No doubt our council will point to the economic advantages of students and the new buildings to the area. But why do they not consider the social disadvantages? We have all been young and possibly made noise when returning home on a weekend evening. However, when there is a high concentration of young people in an area, this becomes a real issue for residents continually awoken in the evening and early hours.

Did you know that the two universities in Newcastle subsidise a special unit within Newcastle police force that has been specifically set up to deal with noise and anti-social behaviour created by students? …
