CHRIS Wilder has done nothing to downplay speculation linking him with the vacant Sunderland job, but says the Black Cats have not made an approach for him.

The 50-year-old Sheffield United manager is one of a number of names linked with the vacant job at the Stadium of Light.

The Black Cats dispensed with Chris Coleman and his assistant Kit Symons at the weekend, when they also announced a takeover of the club.

An "international consortium" led by millionaire insurance broker Stewart Donald has agreed to buy the club from Ellis Short, subject to Football League ratification.

Dismissing Coleman was part of the strategy to start with a clean slate.

Robbie Stockdale will take caretaker control of Sunderland's final game of the season, at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

A full-time appointment is unlikely before a deal is rubber-stamped, and the season is not yet over, but the speculation started immediately.

Sheffield United boss Wilder has been one of those linked to the vacancy amid the backdrop of troubled relations at Bramall Lane, and rather than pour cold water on the talk, his response will have stoked it up. …
