HOW did Brandon Lewis miss the plight of skilled migrants who were being threatened with deportation? Lewis, who is now Conservative Party chairman, was immigration minister in November 2017 when Birmingham Yardley MP Jess Phillips, pictured, wrote a letter to him about one of her constituents.

Her constituent was a skilled migrant tripped up by an "unintentional error regarding HMRC" and who subsequently faced deportation. She posted a partially redacted copy of the letter she had sent to Lewis on Tuesday and raged: "They cannot say they didn't know."

Today she tells me of the complete lack of help from the Home Office. "I didn't get any response from the ministers," she says.

Her constituent worked for central government as a case officer. He was not, she says, someone getting "a dodgy visa through some bogus college and doing black market work. The man is a government employee. He's got a kid with with autism. …
